Life in Abu Dhabi Refugee Setting

by Afsana Afshang

I have been living in a refugee setting called Emirates Humanitarian City in a desert in United Arab Emirates since fleeing Afghanistan in October 1, 2021. There are two camps in which thousands of Afghans are residing. These two camps are prison-like infrastructures; movement is restricted, and no one has the right to go outside the camp unless there is an acute health issue. In the camp, refugees are provided with food, laundry, medical supplies, and clothing. Afghan refugees with various immigration status have been waiting for resettlement to the US since 7 months ago, but contrary to their expectations, the US is unwilling to take them because of bureaucratic procedures, and officials recently said Afghans who worked with the US military, and NGOs based in the US will be relocated to the US while those without such a type of case will be excluded. In addition to my family, there are some Christians living in the two Emirati camps who do not fall under the conditions mentioned above who are very worried about their uncertain future. In fact, being in such a state is painful and stressful for everyone, however, we as children of God believe in the will of God who will be taking care of us.

Looking at the long process of resettlement of former USG and US NGO partners under Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) and Priority Two (P2), and uncertainty of those who do not come under the SIV and P2, therefore, a large number of people have chosen to return to Afghanistan because of the depressive conditions of the camps, and many people are still on the way to deportation to Afghanistan.

The camp in which we live is densely populated, so walking for ladies, and girls are way difficult than the guys and boys. I used to walk with my kids (Zhyar, Mehr Dad) and my husband. The kids have got their scooters, they entertain with their scooters in the camp and sometimes they head to a sandy playground. Our studies in GMU and kids beside our prayers were the activities that have caused to not worry just like the others in the camp. I actually need to be devoted in His will and agree with His plans for our destiny and achievement in our life.
